Leftover lots in existing neighborhoods are often compact but can be good investments for building a new home on spec if you find a plan that suits the particular constraints of the site. Some designs to get you thinking might include 2 bedroom 2 bath Craftsman Plan 479-10, at the top of this post, which is 28 feet square and fits a corner location; and 4 bedroom 2.5 bath.
Mid-Century Modern, Love that Palm Springs look? This design, plan 489-1, recreates the same effortless, outdoor-centric feeling of those classic homes. But unlike a home from the 50's or 60's, this floor plan feels totally up-to-date. Sliding doors lead from the great room to the patio for seamless indoor-outdoor living. A large, curving island provides a main spot for enjoying drinks and appetizers with friends. For dinner, head a few steps over to the open dining room. The master suite includes a large shower and spa tub with a view.
Outdoor Fireplaces. Outdoor fireplaces have reached flashover – taking off throughout the country, even in warm environs. Why? They are an inexpensive way to create a frequently used amenity. We probably do more outside than inside fireplaces, says Binkley, who primarily works in Florida.
Natural Wood Beams. Using wood beams to decorate a high ceiling is a given in luxury housing. But it’s become common in upscale production homes, too, particularly when the roof of the great room gets above 12 feet. Dark wood beams not only provide a pleasing contrast to the smooth white walls but serve as a focal point, as in Plan 935-6.
