Modern Plan 497-19, which is 43 feet wide and 74 feet deep, with a great room and separate living room on the ground floor and could work in a mid-block location. So what does building on spec in such a situation entail? Designer Monika Strunk interviewed one of Houseplans.com's customers to find out.
Homeowners love the idea of gathering around a wood fire pit, especially on a crisp evening. Architects are starting to give more thought to where the fire pit goes. It can become a focal point for several rooms inside the house. Plan 548-17 includes a particularly dramatic island fire pit.
But now merchant builders are using shiplap siding in family rooms, stucco to frame showers in Mediterranean designs, and concrete block to form the interior walls of contemporary homes. Plan 888-3 uses board and batten siding on the walls of the second living room to reinforce an indoor-outdoor feeling. In so-called transitional designs – traditional designs executed with contemporary materials – corrugated metal siding, wire mesh railings, and concrete walls may show up inside the home.
Sports parties are a whole other ballgame (so to speak!). When I edited Builder magazine, we often hosted super bowl parties in show homes. Even though the game was running on multiple screens, guests tended to congregate around one screen in particular so that they could, in effect, watch the game together. It helped on those occasions when the main room for television watching borrowed space from another.
