Turn on any home-design TV show and you’ll repeatedly hear the words “open concept.” Tearing down walls to create open floor plans for the living, dining and kitchen area is what open-concept design is all about. For some, separate rooms still hold their charm. But many homeowners today are taking a sledgehammer to their traditional floor plans so they can enjoy cooking, eating and movie watching all in one space.
“We wanted to develop a program that would help people obtain a significant asset so that we weren’t just ending homelessness for people but actually providing the opportunity for them to climb out of poverty,” Fowler explains. “Owning a house means collateral for a loan, or something to sell and/or an asset to leave to a child or children.” Plus, new construction hasn’t been seen in this neighborhood (which includes numerous abandoned buildings and empty lots) in a while, although CCSS has rehabbed some buildings in the area. The budget for phase one of this project is $1.5 million, and $900,000 has already been committed, including $400,000 from Ford Motor Company.
Understand what the pros and cons are of your floor plan. There isn’t a perfect floor plan. There will always be pros and cons and you will need to decide what are your priorities and what can you learn to live with or without. A large living room window wall that lets in gorgeous natural light may also make your energy cooling and heating bills higher. A floor plan that is open and spacious could make it hard to concentrate in your adjacent home office as your kids are watching tv in the living room. Weigh the pros and cons when looking for the right floor plan.
Super-Open Layout, The rustic touches (including a decorative truss and stone-covered columns) on plan 23-2316 give a warm, rugged look. A super-open layout inside makes it easy to move from the island kitchen to the dining room and living area, where a fireplace contributes a bit of definition. Relax in the master bedroom, which enjoys private access to the bathroom.
